SO-50 on Baofeng UV5R

David Mercado KK4MND has produced a video showing how easy it is to receive the amateur radio satellite SO-50.

This video demonstrates how to communicate via Amateur Ham Radio Satellite using an inexpensive £30 Baofeng UV5R Dual Band Radio and MFJ dual band antenna from Amazon. Among the stations heard are Hector Martinez CO6CBF, Dave Beumer W0DHB and James Bayne KI4SIY.

SO50 frequencies
Uplink – 145.850 MHz with 67 HZ CTCSS
(initial 74.4 Hz CTCSS tone required if satellite has not already been activated)
Downlink – 436.800 MHz

ESTCube-1 is the first Estonian satellite. Developed as part of the Estonian Student Satellite Program, it was launched on 7 May 2013 aboard a Vega carrier rocket.[1] Student Satellite is an educational project in which university and high school students can participate.[2][3] The CubeSat standard for nanosatellites was followed during the engineering of ESTCube-1, resulting in a 10x10x11.35 cm cube, with a volume of 1 liter and a mass of 1.048 kg.

Updated AMSAT LVB Tracker to be shown at Dayton

AMSAT has sold the popular G6LVB Tracker (as seen in photo)for several years. This year, we will have a new version which replaces the amber LCD display with an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display.

Amsat LVB Tracker

Amsat LVB Tracker

The new display offers a high visibility contrast with a wide angle of view. It will be available in blue, green and amber.

LVB Trackers will be available with the recommended serial (RS-232) I/O. The recommended minimum donation will remain $200. An FTDI USB/Serial module is available as an option for an additional $25.             A picture showing the old and new displays may be found on amsat.org.

Current LVB Tracker owners may update their own units. The OLED displays used are manufactured by Newhaven, NHD-0216KZW series, and are available from Mouser and other online parts suppliers. The OLED displays have less depth so the PEM fasteners need to be shortened for correct fit and viewing thru the front of the case. The LVB Tracker firmware will also require updating. Current owners may send their LVB Tracker to WB8CXO for retrofit if they don’t wish to do the modifications themselves.

Upgrading existing trackers will be $50 + shipping. Contact WB8CXO@AMSAT.ORG for details.

AMSAT would like to acknowledge the many contributors to this effort. Mike Young, WB8CXO who has supported the Tracker and whose initiative was essential to this development. John Drago, W8FAA modified the LVB Tracker firmware to support the OLED display. Ken Baker from Ridge Machine manufactured the PEM fastener cutting jig. Steve Belter, N9IP, Mark Hammond, N8MH and John Papay, K8YSE did beta testing. And finally Gould Smith, WA4SXM, LVB Tracker project manager for his continuous guidance and support.

How to pack a big solar sail in a tiny cubesat

A simple paper-folding technique could help tiny satellites unfurl big sails in space to detect micrometeoroid impacts, scientists say.

The folding strategy, described Tuesday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A Mathematical and Physical Sciences, could be used to pack relatively large sails into miniature satellites known as cubesats. When the sails pop out, they could provide a bigger area to catch meteoroid impacts.

“It’s like putting a bigger windshield on your car to catch more bugs,” said study co-author Nicolas Lee, an aerospace engineer at the California Institute of Technology.

The world’s first mobile phone 1U cubesat satellite.

8000x-1 will be the first cubesat to fully implement mobilephone technology within a 1U (10×10×10 cm) cubesat.
Due for launch later this month, 8000x-1 will be fully controlled by the mobile phones OBC, “Loof Prial” the project sponsores aim to release an “off-the-shelf” kit starting around £300 ($456) in June 2013.

Miss Teresa Green, project manager gave AMSAT-UK unprecedented access to  “Loof Prial” workshop located in Kent, England, we must say how impressed we were with the facilities.

Jimmy Riddle (Senior Engineer) explained how the system will work ” 8000x-1 is designed around the Dyna TAC Motorola Mobile phone (pictured below) , The 8000x-1 OBC is the heart of the project, many months of design have gone into fitting the phone within a very small space,  design teams have managed to cut the phone in half and make it fit within a 10x10x10 cm cube”

A full list of science projects will be released in the next few days, but looking at the literature, 8000x-1 boasts some impressive activities.
