An amateur radio contact between students from Powys Combined Schools GB4PCS and UK astronaut Tim Peake GB1SS took place at 1053 GMT on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

The video starts with an introduction by the head teacher and is followed by the schools giving presentations of their activities and studies in Space and STEM subjects.

The ARISS portion of the video starts at approximately 26 minutes with Susan Buckle from the UK Space Agency giving an introduction before handing over to Ciaran Morgan M0XTD, the ARISS Operations Lead in the UK.

The contact with Tim Peake GB1SS starts at approximately 51 minutes.

After the contact has finished, the Head Girl from Builth Wells High School, Gwen Davies, introduces Jeremy Curtis and Susan Buckle from the UK Space Agency for an explanation of the science on board the ISS and a general Q&A session with the audience.

After the Q&A session, Gwen concludes the contact with thanks to all involved and gives a traditional Welsh goodbye.

On Saturday, March 5, 2016 students from Powys Secondary Schools, call sign GB4PCS, had an amateur radio contact with UK astronaut Tim Peake GB1SS.

The contact, led by radio amateur Beccy Bowen 2W0YLL, took place at Builth Wells High School and students from the school along with Gwernyfed High School pupils were able to ask Tim Peake questions for 8 minutes as the ISS passed by traveling at 27,600 km/hour.

Wales Online carried an interview with Adam Tofarides MW0XDD, Chair of the Brecon and Radnor Amateur Radio Society. Adam gained his Foundation licence in April 2014, and progressed to Intermediate and Advanced in October and December of the same year. He said the contact was an “amazing experience”. He added: “The hall was completely packed out. There must have been around 170 people.”

“No-one could quite believe it was going to happen and we were quite stunned when we got hold of Tim on the first attempt.”

“It’s the first and last time it’s going to happen in Wales that we’ll be able to speak a British astronaut while they are at the ISS.”

“It’s an achievement to inspire these pupils and encourage them to carry on with this in the future.”

An amateur radio contact between students at the City of Norwich School GB2CNS and UK astronaut Tim Peake GB1SS took place at 14:40 GMT on Friday, February 26, 2016.

City of Norwich School ISS Link 2016-02-26Radio amateur Tim Hare M6HTJ, a Year 10 pupil at CNS, led the space linkup. The pupils asked a range of questions from ‘what happens to the blood if you cut yourself in space’ to ‘what’s your favourite place to fly over’ to ‘what sort of experiments are you doing in space’? The 10 minute live link up was made possible by the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) team.

Daniel Cussen EI9FHB asked John Brier KG4AKV to edit the videos he and Jean Pierre F6DZP had received from the 2395 MHz ISS HamTV transmitter. This was added to the video recorded at the City of Norwich school. The audio from HamTV is used not just the VHF audio.

ARISS UK have released an edited 73 minute video of the ARISS contact between Tim Peake GB1SS and the Oasis Academy Brightstowe, Bristol GB1OAB which took place on February 19, 2016.

The video starts with a summary produced by the students at the school of their involvement in, and activities carried out, during their study of Space and STEM. This portion of the video concludes with the school band performing a cover of a number of songs related to space!

Dr David Parker, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency welcomes everyone present before handing over to Ciaran Morgan M0XTD (at approx 20 minutes) from ARISS who begins the ARISS programme with an introduction of the team, their roles and all the equipment that has been brought to the school to help facilitate the contact.

The actual ARISS contact starts at approx. 37 minutes.

After the contact has finished, the school head students concludes the afternoon with a thank you speech.

Tracking Tim Peake and radio technology workshop held February 12 at the City of Norwich School Ground Control Day with Norfolk Amateur Radio Club

On Friday, February 26, 2016, at approximately 14:40 UT, an ARISS contact is planned between UK astronaut Tim Peake GB1SS and the City of Norwich School GB2CNS.

The International Space Station (ISS) signal will be audible over the British Isles and Europe on 145.800 MHz FM and streamed live on the ARISS Principia website which is going through a webhosting test right now.

School presentation:

This contact is a collaborative project between three schools in Norfolk and their local university, UEA. Norwich School employ an Ogden Trust Teaching Fellow whose job is 50% dedicated to Physics outreach and she has led the project.

City of Norwich School (CNS) are hosting the link up. Reepham High School have an observatory on site and are hosting a ‘spot the station’ event.

36 schools have signed up to be a part of all we have planned and have each received an age-appropriate radio kit for use in lessons and clubs funded by RCUK through the UEA.

Students will ask as many of the following questions as time allows.

20. Tom (Aged 14):  As a plane ascends in the atmosphere, we are told to blow our noses or swallow to minimise pain. How do you deal with this with the g-force you experience in the rocket?

ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crew members onboard the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crew members on ISS can energize youngsters’ interest in science, technology and learning.
