June GEO Newsletter available for free download

GEO Newsletter 58 Front CoverThe June PDF of the weather satellite publication GEO Newsletter produced by the Group for Earth Observation is now available for free download.

The Group for Earth Observation’s aim is to enable amateur reception of weather and earth imaging satellites that are in orbit or planned for launch in the near future. Membership of GEO is free.

Among the items in this newsletter Francis Bell G7CND writes about the GEO display at the Kempton Park Amateur Radio Rally, Les Hamilton provides an update on the Meteor M2 satellite and of course there are the impressive weather satellite images received by members.

SSTL has more than 25 years of experience in delivering bespoke Earth observation missions, operating constellations and providing imagery to a diverse range of customers.

GEO organises symposia. The first was in May 2004, there has been one every year since then – the most recent in May 2011. The programmes included workshops for total beginners and for the more advanced users of MSG-1. Full details are published in the GEO Quarterly and the groups website.

The quarterly GEO magazine features colour images, advice and commentary about the latest Earth imaging satellites and other developments. Thirty one issues have been published so far – the next is due in June 2012. Other resources available to new members are computer software, equipment advice and support from other members.

50 percent more satellites to be launched in the decade ahead

Civilian government agencies are expected to procure more satellites for operational missions in Earth observation, meteorology, navigation, and communications. In most countries, communications satellites (comsat) are now primarily acquired by private companies for commercial services, but several governments continue to fund comsat technology development domestically to ensure they have cost-effective systems when needed.
