Project for school QO-100 amateur radio stations

Es'hail-2 Qatar-OSCAR-100DARC reports on a Practical Seminar about the amateur radio QO-100 geostationary satellite transponders. Part of seminar fees goes to the “School stations on QO-100” project.

A translation of the DARC post reads:

Top-class seminar in the DARC office in Baunatal: On February 28, experts from AMSAT-DL e.V. gave around 40 people a detailed insight into the possibilities offered by the QO-100 amateur radio transponders on the geostationary satellite Es’hail-2.

AMSAT-DL President Peter Gülzow, DB2OS, started with a keynote speech. Workshops with four lecturers dealt with different operating modes, different hardware concepts and readily available software solutions for the PC.

Part of the attendance fee will go to the joint project of DARC and AMSAT-DL “School stations on QO-100”. Together they want to equip ten schools that already have a training call sign with a complete reception system for the narrowband transponder.

DARC and AMSAT-DL want to motivate more young people for amateur radio through the possibilities that QO-100 offers.

5 watt 2.4 GHz Amplifier Kit for QO-100

5 watt 2400 MHz Amplifier Kit

5 watt 2400 MHz Amplifier Kit

The AMSAT-UK shop is now stocking a 5 watt 2.4 GHz amplifier kit for use with the QO-100 geostationary satellite.

The amplifier was designed by Kurt Moraw DJ0ABR and the kit was implemented by Arved Viehweger M0KDS.

The kit includes a single sided PCB on which is already mounted the PA transistor, there is a suitable heat sink on which to mount the PCB with the provided screws. All electronic components are included as are 2 SMA sockets. Assembly of the kits will require some surface mount components to be soldered to the PCB.

Note: It does not include a case for the unit and a separate 24 volt power supply will be required.

Iceland’s national amateur radio society, the IRA, reports Elín Sigurðardóttir TF2EQ, launched TF3YOTA from TF3IRA’s radio room in Skeljanes on December 19.

First at 14 MHz and when the conditions disappeared it switched to the IRA’s satellite station for communication via the Es’hail-2 / Qatar-Oscar-100 satellite. Ari Þórólfur Jóhannesson TF1A, IRA VHF Manager, assisted Elina and posted, among other things, a fun video of the contacts on Facebook.

The YOTA project began last year (2018) and will be operational in December each year. It is designed to increase young people’s interest in amateur radio. The project is under the auspices of IARU Area 1 and all national amateur radio amateurs in the Region are involved (as well as national members of Regions 2 and 3).

Elín Sigurðardóttir TF2EQ, is the IRA’s youth representative and YOTA project manager together with Árni Frey Rúnarsson, TF8RN. They plan to activate the call sign on as many HF bands (as required) throughout the month, as well as contacts on the OSCAR-100 satellite.

Amateur radio use of 2400 MHz in Spain

Es'hail-2 Qatar-OSCAR-100Spain’s national amateur radio society URE reports that amateurs will be allowed to use 2,400.050 to 2,409.500 MHz for QO-100 (Es’hail-2) geostationary satellite contacts until Dec 26, 2020.

A translation of the URE post says:

At the request of the Spanish Amateur Radio Union (URE), last March the Secretary of State for Digital Advance authorized until September 26, 2019 under certain conditions and on a temporary and experimental basis the realization of emissions from the amateur service in the frequency band 2400,050 to 2409,500 MHz.

The URE has again requested the Secretary of State for Digital Advance the extension of the aforementioned administrative authorization for a period of one year.

On September 26, the Resolution of the Secretary of State for Digital Advance is approved by the resolution Authorize until December 26, 2020 to the holders of amateur radio authorizations, the realization of emissions from the amateur service in the frequency band 2,400,050 to 2,409,500 MHz., With a maximum eirp of 1500 watts and using directive antennas with a gain not less than 22.5 dBi, from authorized amateur radio stations located anywhere in the national territory to the QO-100 satellite located in the 25.9ºE orbital position of the geostationary orbit.
