FUNcube-1 and UKube-1 (which carries the FUNcube-2 boards) both have dual STEM education and ham radio missions, including SSB/CW linear transponders. Howard also touches on the FUNcube ground station for schools using the FUNcube Dongle Software Defined Radio (SDR) and preliminary plans for other satellites.

It is expected that FUNcube-1 wil be launched around November 2013 on a Dnepr rocket from from Dombarovsky near Yasny. UKube-1 with the FUNcube-2 boards currently plans to launch in the 3rd quarter of 2013 from Baikonur in Kazakhstan on a Soyuz-2.

FUNcube Dongle Pro+ Tested with NOAA 19

Dave Mellor G4EWK tested his new FUNcube Dongle Pro+ Software Defined Radio by receiving the NOAA 19 weather satellite.

The FUNcube Dongle Pro+ LF/MF/HF/VHF/UHF SDR was developed for educational outreach as part of the ground segment for the FUNcube satellite.

A proportion of the FCD-Pro+ sales goes to support the AMSAT-UK FUNcube satellite project.

Whistle-like signal in Amateur Radio 40m band

OZ9AEC has found a strange signal in the 7 MHz band using his AMSAT-UK FUNcube Dongle with an HF up-converter.

A strange whistle-like signal received on the 40 meter band using Gqrx software defined radio receiver and a Funcube Dongle equipped with a shortwave converter. The signal appears to be amplitude modulated with suppressed lower side band (just like UVB-76 😉 ) Is it an ionosonde or a numbers station?

The February issue of the UK magazine Radiouser features a 5 page article on the AMSAT-UK FUNcube Dongle (FCD) VHF/UHF Software Defined Radio written by Mike Richards G4WNC.

For the review amateur radio dealer Martin Lynch & Sons loaned a FCD to Mike who ended up buying one for himself!

Other articles in the February issue include Pat Carty’s ‘Military Matters’ column, DXTV and NDB DXing. In the ‘Sky High’ column Godfrey Manning G4GLM highlights the problems that wind farms cause to Radar and questions the need for the extensive restrictions on UK airspace to be imposed during July and August.

Weather Sat Picture Received With FUNcube Dongle

to receive a weather satellite picture in the 136-138 MHz band. On the FUNcube Yahoo Group he writes:

Today [August 19]  I received  a picture  from NOAA 15  WX  satellite with  simple “stuff” FUNcube Dongle (FCD)  and a VHF/UHF Ground Plane Antenna  up 12 meters above  ground , 200 meters  above  sea level, 15 meter  coax cable WITHOUT  pre-amplifier !

Hardware:  FCDpro  with newest Firmware V18.i with PC  WinXP with onboard Graphics-Chip

Software: FCD-DF,  Doppler-DF,  SpectraVue, wxtoimage

Nice to  see what’s possible  with simple “stuff”  :))

In a follow up email he said he had also used a Ground Plane Antenna in the attic as well as one outside to receive the picture. He says he was surprised to get this good  quality.

The FUNcube Dongle was developed as part of the educational outreach for AMSAT-UK FUNcube satellite project. Although it was designed  to enable school students to receive the satellite beacon the wide frequency coverage of 64 – 1700MHz has meant that it can be used for many other applications.
